Areas of Interest:

optics and laser spectroscopy, energy policy, technical project management and leadership

Edward Moses is an Associate Director of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) Programs at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). As leader of the NIF Directorate, he is responsible for completing construction and activation of the NIF, the largest laser facility in the world, and transforming it into a national user facility for the study of basic science, including astrophysics, planetary physics and materials under extreme temperature and pressure conditions. He leads the National Ignition Campaign to achieve fusion ignition in the laboratory. Additionally, he is responsible for the development of high-average-power lasers, short-pulse lasers and high-average-power gamma ray sources.

Moses received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Cornell University and is internationally recognized in laser and optical sciences and high-technology project management. He began his career in 1977 with the Hughes Aircraft Company as a scientist and program manager. He first joined LLNL in 1980, becoming the deputy associate director for lasers before leaving the laboratory in 1990 to become the executive vice president of Advanced Technology Applications. He has served various leadership positions including serving as assistant associate director for program development in the Physics and Advanced Technologies Directorate where he led a team that developed a new method of radiation therapy for cancer that was approved by the FDA and licensed for commercial use.

Moses has numerous publications, invited talks and presentations, and seven patents in laser technology and computational physics. His honors include the National Nuclear Security Administration Defense Programs Award of Excellence for Significant Contributions to the Stockpile Stewardship Program, the Memorial D.S. Rozhdestvensky Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Lasers and Optical Sciences, the RD100 Award for Peregrine Radiation Therapy, and recognition for achievements in project management and safety. He is a member of the American Physical Society, the American Nuclear Society, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the International Society for Optical Engineering, and Fusion Power Associates.
