Dr. Francine Berman is currently the Vice President for Research at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Prior to that she served as Director for the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), called in the U.S. Congress, a "national treasure" in Science and Technology. She also serves as Director of the National Science Foundation's National Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure (NPACI), a consortium of over 40 national and international partners whose mission is to advance science by creating an ubiquitous, comprehensive, and persistent national computational infrastructure. Dr. Berman is a professor, holder of the High Performance Computing Endowed Chair in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at UC San Diego, and a Fellow of the Association of Computing Machinery. Dr. Berman received her Ph.D. in 1979 from the University of Washington.
Dr. Berman is a pioneer in "Grid Computing" and a leader in national and international efforts to build a comprehensive information technology infrastructure to support advances in science and engineering, and modern solutions to problems in health, the environment and society. Over the last two decades, her research has focused on the development of adaptive software, tools and models for Parallel and Grid Computing environments, and Computational Science. Dr. Berman has served on numerous program committees, advisory boards and steering committees and currently serves as one of the two Principal Investigators for NSF's $53,000,000 TeraGrid project as well as co-PI on the $35,000,000 Extensible Terascale Facility (ETF) project.
She served as a CCST Council Member from 2003-2008.
