Brian Shay currently teaches all levels high school mathematics at Canyon Crest Academy, part of the San Dieguito
Union High School District. He is also an Adjuct Instructor at San Diego Mesa College and Grossmont College. In 1998
he was the first person to ever earn a BA and MA in Mathematics from SUNY Potsdam in three years. He earned additional
MAs in Mathematics and Teaching from UC Davis in 2000 and 2002, respectively.
He was awarded the 2008 Fulbright-Hays scholarship where he spent five weeks in India studying its culture, education
structure and mathematics curriculum. He was chosen at 2009 Teacher of the Year for Canyon Crest Academy and the San
Dieguito Union High School District, as well as the 2009 Outstanding Classroom High School Mathematics Teacher by the
Greater San Diego Math Council. He was also awarded the Joseph B. Whitehead Educator of Distinction Award in 2004.
Brian has been an active member of the California Mathematics Council and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
for 10 years. He regularly presents at regional and national conferences about making math classes more high tech, engaging,
and project based.
