Engineering Teacher, James Monroe High School, North Hills
Lew Chappelear, is an engineering teacher at James Monroe High School in North Hills, and founding member of the
Engineering and Design Small Learning Community at the school. In 2008, Lew was chosen as California Teacher of
the Year, and was one of four finalists for National Teacher of the Year. He has been a National Board Certified
Teacher since 2005. Lew has a background in mechanical and manufacturing engineering, having earned his Master of
Science in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia University. He sponsored his schools first Robotics team, and
works with students and family members to design, build and compete at local, state and national levels. His
work with his students often extends beyond the classroom, helping them to make connections to local businesses
and secure internships at places such as JPL and Northrop Grumman.
